When I first got L4D, I was excited. I loved the game. Still do. Since it's a Valve game, I almost immediately started looking on the net for custom maps and so on. I found out about this project at that point. I believe that the mall map was in development. I thought, "Neat. Someone's remaking some zombie movie into a campaign for L4D. Maybe I'll check it out when it's done." Two days later I got the idea to make the Hunter Training Map, and I haven't thought about DbD since.

Fast-forward to today. Some n00b who happens to be on my friend's list for the simple reason that I always accept invites asked me how to install this. I come here, and I read the comments. It's been nearly a year since the "Public Beta" release. I told the guy not to bother with installing it, because it's not a .vpk file.

if you made it into a vpk in the first place, it would have gone over waaaay better and less people would be bitching. but instead it's a big friggin folder that needs to be hand distributed and takes up a well placed chunk on my drive (considered it a folder, but big nonetheless). What you waiting for, make it a vpk that works so the rest of us could actually enjoy it :(

I started playing Left 4 Dead itself only last year so I wasn't waiting on this campaign for two years. I also wouldn't have built it up in my mind so much. I think that is the big difference in my opinion.

It does have more puzzles in it than any other 3rd party campaign I have played and I think that deserves some recognition. Even if the puzzles are silly in spots.

I think they should "at least" complete the final map. Like this, there is no conclusion. Even if their "mysterious fifth character" idea doesn't work out, >at least finish the last map Darth< Otherwise, you look like you quit. You can still finish the last map and gain that respect.

I agree that the narration gets drowned out by the other sounds in the game. I thought it was a cool idea to try. There are also tons of extra touches in these maps that you have to pay close attention to notice. The designers were really into these maps and it shows.

Why are people so fired up about this campaign? I have nothing vested in their campaign (good or bad) and chances are neither do you. Sounds like sour grapes to me. Perhaps this didn't live up to the hype and people's expectations. But, they did bring something different into the game and they deserve some respect for it.

Darth, finish the last map.

I love how everybody is complaining when its their fault the beta got released in the shape it was in. Keep in mind people that you all were the ones hounding Darth Brush & Co with all your incessant "I want it now!" "Who cares! Release the mod!" "Whens it going to be done" "You said it was going to be released (insert date) that was 30 minutes ago".

So what did he do? Since it was the only way to shut you impatient people up apparently he released it as is (and serves you all right). And now your taking your ungratefulness that they complied despite their (it will be done when its done).

In my mind you all got exactly what you deserved. A "buggy pile of trash as you all call it" because you people couldn't wait for them to finish it.

Agreed! I finally got this thing to go so i could do a run thru. It's eye candy, that's for sure. Tons of bugs. That's funny… considering the time in development.

Then we get the typical comments form people. You know, the kind like, "Go make your own map if you can do better" or "are you a mapper". I see this all the time. This is the hitback one gets for criticizing a campaign or map. It's low and typical of a adolescent. It means thy don't like your criticism and that means you'll get a dumb response in return… one that doesn't back up your own criticism.

I don't understand why the stupid fanboys always say give them credit… HELL NO! This crap was in development for over 2 years. Yes, it started as HL2 mod but still it had enough time to be ported, tested and finished for L4D. After that long it should have at least a finale. Without finale it is not even a campaign since a campaign has beginning, middle and end… it's like story. This is just a few maps put together (and it's tagged as "Final"?). And buggy as hell to that.

Some things they did put in are not even L4D, the entire thing is not L4D campaign but anyway… Example, the stupid fifth character that tells you what to do? Are they kidding? This is not innovative, it's stupid. First of all there is a reason why this game is called "Left 4 Dead". Secondly, this is FPS horror/survival which mean you shoot everything in site. Solving puzzles to advance is good but having some character that you never see telling you what to do is plain stupid and out of place. You don't have to even think, you just follow orders… dumb.

I won't even try to list all the bugs/problems that this "campaign" has. Bugs/problems that it shouldn't even have after all the time it was put into it. I've seen custom campaigns done by one person which are state of the art and well worth playing, and replaying. But this one is plain crap.

There is a reason why at least 90% of the comments on the net are negative about Dead Before Dawn. And the reason is that this "campaign" sucks ass. And if you actually read the "good" comments all they say is "it's a good campaign" or "nice" or other one to two words posts. That tells you that those comments are posted by ignorant fanboys that actually have nothing to support it or the developers themselves. The negative posts are posted by everyday players that have something to back their claims about how bad this campaign is. They list bugs, the extremely long time it was in development, entire team of people that worked on it, etc. After considering all that their work falls under the same standards with regular games. You wouldn't accept this from a regular game why then accept it from a team of people that took them over 2 years to work on it and at the end released a buggy piece of crap… without end. You can give a brake to a campaign that was developed by one person but not to something like this.

There was WAY TOO MUCH hype over this piece of crap. Not to mention that it was used by one of the developers to scheme some money from naive people for his new computer. And it was scheme since he actually wrote that if no one donates for his new computer this campaign would not be finished. After playing it you realize that it would be much better if no one donated.

This is my personal opinion, which happens to reflect hundreds if not thousands of others that downloaded it and posted their negative experience. So saying that no one should judge it since we are not developers and we can't make a game would be stupid since the games ARE judged by the GAMERS that just play them and not develop them. And the reason is that the games are targeted at the gamers. So actually only the gamers can judge the games. The gamers, like every other consumer, care about the final product and not the process. Otherwise nothing would be ever finished or done well if everyone would say "give them a credit". In fact all we need is more negative comments so people that released this crap never release anything like this again.

If you've ever mapped before you'd probably at least have more appreciation for the lofty goals they attempted. Some of it was just really cool and made me really wonder how they did stuff. From a fun perspective some of it was legitimately frustrating. The sound, as cool as it was, was a fail when it was critical to the mission and yet the horde drowned it out. Hype is a dangerous thing. You want interest, but when the expectation is God-like, that's tough. I enjoyed it, but sure it could've been better, and maybe someday will.

A waste of time, bandwidth and disc space.

I've been reading comments on a few different sites and they vary from good, so-so and bad.

Mine? Bad. After spending an hour dow2nloading and then installing (by hand obviously), the game never even got started for me.

I have a glitch on my L4D which is that IF the map/campaign isn't in a .vpk format, then i can't play it. No matter what i try, it never gets far. The game crashes and i get a pop-up telling me i've been disconnected form the server because Steam can't authenticate user.

That's bullsh!t because i have a legal copy of L4D and am fairly skilled at installing custom content.

So, this whole thing was a huge fail for me. After reading some of the con comments, i deleted this sh!t off my computer. Nothing is that important to keep a campaign that's over a gig in size.

So, some of you may rejoice in this but for as long as this was in development, the numerous bugs i've read about makes me shake my head in wonder.

Would you post a map that is not complete. Pretty much a waste when you get done with the food court and all is over without a finish. The 5th character does not even show, but it sounds to be another zombie. I liked playing it until the mall area. First of all you have to pay close attention to what you are doing and what he is saying. Pointers:
-Go fast and run through the horde. This is a timed event.
-Go to the left and then to the right hit the locked door first. This was the only way I could hold down the damn button for 25 secs without continuous restart.
-Never try to go outside. Instant death
-After you lock the door the dead body of this dudes assisstant is in 1 of 2 areas. And you only have 4 minutes to find it. Go all the way to the otherside of the mall it will be in one of 2 rooms to the right. You have "use button" the body twice.
-Go back to the unlocked door and get in before the door recloses. You only have about 3-6 sec.
-Make your way upstairs and hit the lock box for the main doors. Get on the mini and make sure you do not allow more then 15 through there is a counter in the middle of the 2 doors.
-Go through the maze of backrooms and to the saferoom to get to the mangmt area. You have to go through the bank.
-Now you have to go and reboot the servers after finding the mngrs room. Mngrs. room is all the way to the end. Look at the white board. First server is towards the saferoom 2nd is near the mngrs office.
-Work your way down stairs. hit the green (horde) then the red (opens door)
-Fight through horde through the laser motion detetors to the right go in the hole to left.
-Try to open door one. Try again
-Make sure you get the beer on your way through food market.
-Saferoom= fight tank
Over no ending :)

By the way the beginning 2 levels is all that makes playing this map fun. After it's pretty boring.

Didn't bother with rebuild of sound. One drawback - never knew when an event was happening - no music to warn me. Map through park was too long. Actually got boring. Got boomed 4 times once in a tunnel without actually seeing the boomer. Large gaping flaw in this level - bots went through a barrier leaving me on other side to get pummelled by a witch. Didn't like that so much. I only played 2 levels. The new environments are nice but nothing exciting.
Deleted :P

Played it today after grabbing the torrent file. On the third level I had to turn on no clip because a door was stuck and I was trapped, then the puzzle I had to solve wouldnt work so I just started a new game on level 4 which was no better I went out of a door and the building ended in a hole in the map where it just looked completely unfinished. I don't know if the map is bugged or if the route isnt clear enough but i never heard any custom sounds and never saw the elusive fifth character. I wish they would have waited and released it in a finished form.
