Hunter Training Map
Overview
Version 3.0 L4D2 compatible.
L4D2 notes:
The Live Fire Course is NOT playable in L4D2 without SourceMod >= 1.4 installed due to the cvar "mp_gamemode" being hidden, however, with SM installed, it works fine- albeit without displaying pounce damage.
Single Player:
1) open console
2) type "map hunter_training_map versus" without the quotes
3) Press enter.
Multiplayer:
NOT currently available on L4D2, due to issue with servers not allowing cheats to be turned on, a requirement for the map. (Cheats are only able to be turned on in "listen" servers on L4D2.)
The map contains a series of challenges designed to teach players a variety of hunter techniques. These challenges are laid out in a similar style to Portal; the challenges start out very easy but progress quickly in difficulty.
The map is divided into 5 sections, each section covering a different aspect of hunter ability:
C1-C5: Basic Pouncing Techniques.
C6-C10: Advanced Pouncing Techniques.
C11-C15: Precision pouncing (Or, Target Practice)
C16-C20: Advanced Combo (Or, Hunter of Persia)
C21: Live Fire Course
The map is very user-friendly - there's NO messing around in the console required here with the autospawn system! Each challenge has written instructions and a fully animated VIDEO SCREEN that demonstrates how the challenge can be completed. In addition - a few of the trickier challenges can be skipped using a teleporter, so there is no risk of getting stuck!

Installation
Method 1 (Easiest):
Right-Click the .vpk from within the .zip file, and select the "Open Outside" option. (It may be named differently depending on the program you're using, this is what it's called in 7zip.) You will receive a confirmation message stating the addon was installed.
Method 2:
Extract the .vpk anywhere, and double-click it. You will receive confirmation it was installed.
Method 3:
Extract the .vpk to C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\left 4 dead\left4dead\addons
Finally - HAVE FUN!
Additional info
I have a dedicated server for anyone who wishes to use it. It's located in Chicago, IL, USA, so be aware you may have huge ping depending on your location. (Outside North America is pretty much guaranteed.)
To use it, the lobby leader must type "ms_force_dedicated_server 68.232.168.63:27015" into the console BEFORE starting the search.
The server is modded to allow up to 8 infected- if you find yourself stuck as Survivor, type "/joininfected" into the chat and you will be swapped.

I can't seem to get this map working in Single player it won't let me join infected side what to do D:
I have the same problem. Any fixes?
There is a folder in the zip file, "cfg", with a file inside it, "hunter_training.cfg". Make sure it's in your maps folder with the other two files.
So the hunter_training.cfg file would be in "…Steam\SteamApps\common\left 4 dead\left4dead\maps\cfg".
The cfg changes the gamemode to versus prior to the map being loaded- which is needed in order to play the map.
EDIT: The above is no longer valid. You don't need and do not have a config file.
I've encountered the same problem, and did what eyeonus (and the readme file in the zip) said, but unfortunately, it didn't work.
I still have the problem of not becoming an infected at the beginning of the map.
Please, if anyone knows another fix, please tell me.

Run it by typing "mp_gamemode versus;map hunter_training".
All the config file does is execute the gamemode command before the map loads: either you don't have the file in the right spot, or your game hates you and it isn't running the config even though it is. :)
Download the latest update. That'll fix your problem guaranteed.
I downloaded it, extracted everything and I dont see a config file anywhere…am I missing something here? Cuz I really wanna play this. Thanks.
That's because thee isn't one. I got rid of it a long time ago due to the extremely large amount of people who couldn't figure out how to get the map working. They kept putting the config file in the wrong place. So instead I created a loading map that does what the config file did. Read the changelog.
Try selecting a player before starting the game. I selected Louis, fired up single player and it auto-converted me. If that simply doesn't help, try enabled sv_cheats 1 and entering mp_switchteams into the console. To simplify, sv_cheats 1;mp_switchteams as one command string.
so after the crash course dlc, this map doesnt work. i tried using the "mp_gamemode versus;map hunter_training" but the game starts me off survivor all the time. PLEASE UPDATE eyeonus as i just got this game and am looking to improve on my hunter.
Verified. The problem is due to the Lighthouse DLC cvar mp_gamemode being removed.
Apparently Valve doesn't like my map, as they changed what it is how it works twice now.
When I find out the mode cvar is, I'll release an update as soon as possible.
Alright. I got it figured out. Until the update is released, you can start the map by typing "map hunter_training_map versus".
Valve got rid of mp_gamemode and gave it's purpose to map.

Sorry if this has been asked and answered, but i couldn´t see it anywhere. But when I type "ms_force_dedicated_server 68.232.168.63:27015" it says unknown command, and yes, I tried without the "´s. Thanks if you answer or just point out where this, if it has, has been answered.
ms_force_dedicated_server has been replaced by mm_dedicated_force_servers.

As well as having 5 sections for precision and dodging, you can add timing.
For example, pillars coming out of the wall in fixed speeds and you havde to make it to the top (as in a section in the CLASSIC old NES game Chip & Dale if youve tried it).
Or pillars in a lava sea where bolts of fire fly around (ok, maybe dodging…) but its also timing in a way.
Or perhaps doors that open and close themselves after a difficult climb up to them?
Something like that, hope you like the idea. If you dont, toss it away to where the sun dont shine :D

That sounds like a good idea, but I think a hunter version of "Prince of Persia" would be better off as it's own map. I'll think about it.

Just played the map, Fun but also quite easy (For me atleast) the only part I could not do was the Kai Vert, It just annoyed me every time I hit a corner slightly or tapped a wall it would teleport me back to the start.
Cant wait to see the other chapters though!
This map really helped me learn to use the pc version of the game better. Some of the parts were pretty hard and could get frustrating. The in game videos did help alot though. I can only imagine how hard the rest of the parts are going to be.
Can i play this map on splitscreen with both in the infected team??? I tried it many times, but the second player always is survivor, and he can´t change the team :( Any ideas to solve this problem???
Yes, just type "cmd2 jointeam 3" in the console after you start the splitscreen.
I'll add the command to the map startup so that you don't have to type it in- I honestly didn't think anyone would play my map in splitscreen.
Thank you, for the help, it works!!!!! Its much fun, playing this map in splitscreen. I hope everyone will be able to try it!!!!! But its very cool too, playing this map with a hunter and the other one in survivor. This is much better to pounce onto survivors, who try to shot you down.

The downloads are totally different files for me…two of them don't have the cfg files at all, and the other is a completely different map.
I got rid of the config file in an earlier version. Just run it same as always. You might want to delete the old version first.
i thought the map was great. just the challenge8 where the vert kai jump is. that was very difficult for me :( and a few others . where u have to combine vert jump with horizontal jump etc. those were lil difficult for me . but other then that i thought it was fun :P. i think the hunter city map i got the other day . really gave me some exp. for this map inpaticular

I've installed the map right, extracted all to the maps folder, but when I load up L4D and type "map hunter_training" it comes up with a window called "Assert" and some options

Whichever I choose L4D crashes and so I can't play the map :(

I have no idea what your problem is. You'll have to give me some details if you want any help. All I can say is to make sure that the .vpk file is installed in the addon folder of your server.
I am assuming, of course. I don't have a server, myself. You'd probably be better off asking someone who does.
So I run it and it just crashes my game :( I see the loading screen it loads all the way then just crashes, the screen stays black for a bit but thats about it :( I get an Assert that says
File : ./memstd.cpp

Assert :** OUT OF MEMORY ! Attempted allocation size : 3892314116 **
You need to download the .vpk. The pre-SDK version of the map (What you have) no longer works.

So me and a friend both downloaded this map, but we always seem to get this error. The person who hosted the lobby is able to stay in the map, but anyone else who joined gets disconnected with a screen that says something like "Unable to join, map-*insertmapnamehere*- is different from server" (that's not what it says exactly, but that's basically what's happening).
Any idea how we can fix it?
That sounds like you have different versions. I did recently release an update, so it's possible that one of you has the older .vpk.
I'm not entirely sure, though. The only thing I can suggest is for both of you to delete ALL the hunter training files, both in the addons folder, and, if you downloaded the pre-SDK version, the maps folder, and then download the .vpk file from the link above. That way you'll know for a fact that you're both loading the same version.
(I honestly don't know which map takes precedence- the one in the addon pack or the one in the maps folder, so it's a REALLY good idea to delete all the hunter_training* files in the maps folder if you have them.)
If, after you've made absolutely SURE that the only hunter training file you have is the .vpk hosted on this site, you still get that error, you'll have to talk to Left 4 Dead's tech. support, or at least someone more knowledgeable than me in that area.
EDIT: I would say to check the version, but I realized that I forgot to update the version number in the addoninfo file inside the .vpk, so 2.4 still says it's 2.3, which may be causing the problem, in that it's possible one of you has version 2.3, and the other 2.4, but the game THINKS you both have 2.3 because of my lapse.
EDIT2: There is one easy way to check if you have version 2.3 or 2.4: 2.3 does NOT have the poster displayed above, so when loading the map, you'll see black and pink squares where the poster should be, whereas 2.4 does. So, if you see the poster, you have version 2.4. If you don't, get it. ( :) )
I can't play it. I double-clicked it to make it go to the archive and it said it successfully archived it. When I go to play in single player, I press the add on and it only shows another map that I downloaded. I check if it will show in the add-on and it should but it won't. Could you help me out.
P.S:I have also tried reinstalling it.
actually nevermind. i put in mp_gamemode versus;map hunter_training (which was in one of your comments) it's hard.
The thing is that the instructions are not shown. Instead some purple checkered box shows. Could you tell why that happens?
Okay, first off, are you certain you have the latest version, currently available for download on this page? It's possible your errors are due to not having the version with the SDK related bug fixes.
Secondly, check to make sure you have hunter_training.vpk in "…\Steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead\left4dead\addons"
Thirdly, the visual glitches you are getting are likely due to using the pre-SDK method for starting the map. I have none of these problems on my machine, however, so I'm really just guessing.
Well I had downloaded it just a while ago (probably three days ago). I have one that says pak01_### but i can't find the thing saying l4d_huntertraining
Well, if you don't have hunter_training.vpk in your addons folder, that's your problem.
says unknown time left and the space went up to like 790mb. Dont know what to do because thats the only way i can play the awesome maps. =[
I can't help you. Downloading is a site admin issue. You'll have to talk to them.
And make sure you aren't trying to download the source code.

When hunter_training_map is the current map running on the server it breaks the sv_search_key command. Players can no longer enter the server using it even if they have this map installed. Usually for example if the server is on any mode and someone creates a lobby for different mode the server will accommadate this. (only doesn't work if hunter_training_map is the current map running)
Also, can you somehow make it so if someone want to start a lobby on there own and play hunter_training_map they don't need 5 players. That would be a big plus for this map.
Is it possible for you to sort out the above two things?

I don't know how sv_search_key works, so I can't help there. I do know that Hunter Training only supports the Versus game mode in multiplayer, so that may be the problem.
About your second concern- you only need two players to start a versus multiplayer game, not 5. If you are going to be playing Hunter Training on multiplayer, ALWAYS create a Versus lobby, and ALWAYS stay random.
If you wish to play the game solo, start a SINGLE PLAYER campaign, and choose Hunter Training.
This map is really great, good work eyeonus. I can easily do Hunter City, and this map gave me a great challenge. One suggestion I do have for future versions would be to put teleporters in more convenient locations, and to provide teleporters back to the entrance, so that the player has free reign of the map and can teleport to any challenge they want at any time. For example, instead of having the challenge-skip teleporters placed half-way through the challenge themselves, why not make a side hallway that leads to the skip teleporter and a teleporter back to the entrance? That way, the player can skip to any challenge they want, at any time, without having to no-clip or restart the map.

Okay. I uploaded the .pdf by itself. You can DL it in the Downloads section. It loads fine in Adobe Acrobat Reader 9.1.2.

i read the readme it came with it, but its only from the loyalkng.com site, so its not from your works. Any help?
Step 1: Download v2.6 from here. The one you DLed is v2.3, so it's outdated anyway.

whenever i try to load the map it says map unplayable for about a half second and then l4d freezes. Also i couldnt get it to install without placing it in the addon's folder.

What version are you using? Where did you download from? How did you start the map?
i have the newest version, i downloaded it here and im starting it by going to single player and choosing the map.
Okay, I think I see your problem.
What happens when you start Hunter Training in Single Player is, it loads a "placeholder" map. The placeholder map does EXACTLY two things: It changes the game mode to versus, and then loads the ACTUAL training map. This happens in the space of about 1/10th of a second. The flash of the Map Unplayable error is due to the placeholder map not having a .nav file, and will appear in ANY map that doesn't have a .nav file. It's not important in this case.
The "freezing" is caused by the training grounds being loaded- you get a black screen for a while- about the same amount of time as it takes you to load a map, maybe ten, 20 seconds depending on your computer.
Try it again, and just wait awhile.
Also, before you start the map, type "net_graph 1" into your console, without the quotes, you'll see that, after a few seconds in the black screen, the numbers start changing, which means the training grounds map is almost finished loading.
passed all the challenges, before i used this i was like every other hunter noob pouncing survivors just for the sake of pouncing them, but now i'm giving out 20+ damage on every jump, if you are a hunter noob, for the love of god download this map so that you cant act like a noob if we run into eachother on versus mode -.-

nevermind, manually copied it into addon folder. for some reason i had both an addon and add-on folder which i think was causing the problem.

When I go on Left 4 Dead it says I haven't got any addons installed. I placed it into the add-ons folder. What am I doing worng?

I d/l version 2.6 today tryed it but it wont allow me to change team and automatically spawn me as a survivor. I tryed to open the console for like 30 min (even tryed to bind another key for toggleconsole) so the SV_cheat 1 Mp_changeteam (or something like that) isnt a option right now because i cant seem to gain access to that damned console
the map have been installed with methode 2. I keep receiving a message to the left saying Server CVAR: "MP_Gamemode" changed to coop
and some time there the chose side window (one acces with M key) but even if i select the infected team it wont lets me join and the window will pop again and again until i destroys my computer with a crowbar

In the final challenge, I somehow managed to get killed (6000dmg in one hit?) This ended up me becoming other infected, such as a tank, boomer, etc for the rest of the time.
Just a bug I thought i'd let you know.
Yeah, that's called a headshot.
And if you go into the room the survivors start in as a ghost, you will be auto-spawned as a hunter.

maybe because not enough people explained how to make the vpk into an addon… I know it took me a good 5 hours yesterday to figure out what I had to do to get it extracted, as my original thought was that you had to download the vpk software… :P
I can't seem to get this map to work online at all, niether can my friends. We start in versus and all of us downloaded it 2 days ago. We get 1 of 2 results….
1) In middle of loading, entire game crashes and have to restart L4D
2) In middle of loading, message comes up saying "Disconnected from server, your string table differs from the server's"
What are we doing wrong? Please help.

We all downloaded it from this website, as a VPK file. Far as I know, we should only have to double-click that file and it does the rest. Well thats how we installed it anyway. Is that the right way, or are we just dumbass noobs? lol
Try manually copying the .vpk into your addons folder and see if that works. Otherwise, I can't help you, I don't have any clue why it's doing that.
Does anyone NOT get an error? Maybe the server has the wrong version?
I'll try it, but I think I forgot one piece of important information. We did play it together 1 time the day we downloaded it. It hasn't worked since then. Works just fine in 1-player still, just not working in versus anymore. I have also seen posts with this same error message in other forums for other campaigns, so I dont think its a problem with your map specifically. Maybe a recent update for L4D released? Or server error?
Well, if it's either of those, there's nothing I can do to fix it. I can say that I'm not having the problem.
this happens with the zelda campaign as well. not sure what causes it, but it sucks.

If you get an error when joining my server, try deleting the .vpk you have and re-downloading it from here.

For some reason I cant download it at all. In my download section after downloading this file it says unknown time remaining
that's a weird bug with our secondary file host. let it keep going and it will eventually finish.
just finish until lvl16, i cant pass through that….damn hard.

How do you extract the file?
Open the file hunter_training.zip with any program that can open zip archives, such as Windows Explorer for later versions of Windows, WinZip, WinRAR, 7-zip, the list goes one. It will open a window with two files in it- "hunter_training.vpk" and "Read Me.txt". Double click on the .vpk or follow the installation instructions above.

This map is garbage and you should feel bad. Every time I click mouse1 it crashes my l4d. No other custom map has ever done this. Fix your shitty coding, faggot.

As far as "Mike Jones" is concerned- no one else, in the entire history of this map, has ever had the problem you're describing. As such, it's a safe bet that the problem is being caused by something in your L4D installation, or something in your computer setup, and NOT my map.
I just installed that hunter training addon, and i can play, i can get to about the second level, and then it will Freeze, and a window will pop up saying there is an assert saying Block for X amount of times, always blockk, 'etc, I've tried everyone and none seem to work…

Okay, l downloaded this and l remembered i downloaded this before and installed but now l downloaded it again and now l can't install it keeps on saying that it was already installed and in use but l can't even play it inside left 4 dead. I've already placed it in my addons folder and such. Can someone help me?
First- delete everything in your left 4 dead folder related to hunter training. This is especially important if you have a pre-vpk version.
Second- follow the installation instructions above.
Third- restart the game.
It's so fucking glitchy. I kept spawning as smoker or boomer and it kept sending me to random levels. And for some reason I kept dieing because everything was on fire. Everyone kept telling me to do something in console.
Also, that maze is freaking impossible. I couldn't find any teleporter things to send me to the 7th challenge.
Those are problems associated with playing the map multiplayer and joining after the game has started.
It doesn't matter what you start out as in ghost form- as long as you are in the start room- the one with the pictures of the playable characters and an info box telling you NOT to spawn.
If you are in that room, all you have to do is walk into the corridor AS A GHOST and you will be spawned as a hunter.
As far as being sent to "random levels", you're not. Left 4 Dead spawns an infected ghost at the location of a Survivor. Some of the Challenges- 9,11-15- teleport a Survivor from the start room to the Challenge for the hunters to pounce them- you just happen to be unlucky enough to spawn when the Survivor L4D decides to spawn you at is in one of those Challenges. There's nothing I can do about that, however, typing "z_spawn hunter" in console will turn you into a spawned hunter when you are a ghost, regardless of where you are.
None of the Challenges are impossible, not even the maze. If you are having trouble with any, read the info box and watch the video at the beginning of the Challenge. The info box is there to tell you what to do to pass the Challenge, the video is to show you how.
And the reason you couldn't find any teleporter to the 7th Challenge if because there ISN'T one. There are three classes of teleports in the map: the fail teleports that send you back to the beginning of the Challenge, the three skip-teleports for the most difficult levels- 8-skip-to-9, 10-skip-to-11, and 17-skip-to-18, which are found on the Challenge they skip past, and the Section teleports at the begining of the map after the auto-spawn, which take you to the FIRST Challenge of each section, which are Challenges 6,11,16,and 21, Challenge 1 not needing one as it's just a bit further down the hall than the section 'ports.
But I did start when the game started.
And I don't know about the spawning thing. Someone said we were in the final level, so there wasn't anything to walk down to turn into a hunter, and there wasn't any way for me to get past. I didn't know about the console command though, thanks.
I just figured that there was a teleporter in all of the rooms to skip to the next challenge, I think that would be better than just having them in some rooms. It was really frustrating that I couldn't get past the maze, it was really hard.
So if I get spawned at a challenge ahead of the one I'm on, the only option is to use noclip?
Also, how do I get to the server? I tried it last night, but now it's disappeared from the server list.
Ah, on the live fire course, where the survivors are walking around in a circle, there's a little room they start out in. Walking into that as a ghost will spawn you as a hunter.
I'm working on a new version, wherein I'm going to label that room, and also add a room to go back to the training course, as well as a few other changes.
I only put a skip-teleport on the ones that are extremely frustrating. The maze just requires practice. A few tips- don't spam pounce, line up where you want to pounce next before you land the pounce you're in- that is, start looking at the next wall as soon as you pounce, stay close to the ceiling but don't hit it, and follow the trail of green lights.
If you want to return to an earlier Challenge, all you have to do is touch the fail teleports for the Challenge to be taken to the beginning of that Challenge. For example, if you are at Challenge 9 and want to go to Challenge 4, walk back to 8, touch it's fail-'port, turn to 7, touch its fail-'port, turn to 6, touch its fail-'port….. and so on. The fail-ports are the purple walls and floors. I do not recommend using noclip, as it can easily get you lost- if you leave the training area by going through a wall, you will enter an area where everything is all funky.
If you are starting from a lobby, the lobby leader needs to type "ms_force_dedicated_server 68.232.168.63:27015" into the console before pressing the start button.
If you want to connect directly, enter "connect 68.232.168.63:27015" into the console- one word of caution connecting this way- if my server isn't on the training map, you can't switch it to that map.
Uhh… I just cant start it. After searching for dedicated server, it says "The servers blah blah is different from yours". Just wont.
You have two options:
1) Use my server, listed above, which has the same version available for download on this 0page.
2)Start the game in single player.

I can start the game in Single Player just fine, but as soon as I start it asks me to choose a side. Regardless of what I click, the Choose Side screen just returns endlessly and I never actually start and cannot do anything. Am I missing something here?
I also have this problem. I looked in console and it said "unknown command: mp_gamemode". I looked on other websites and it seems an update Valve made caused this command to not work
Same :P Seems like the update messed loads of console commands up :/
Found a workaround:
map hunter_training_map versus
Type that in console from main menu. This will load the map into versus mode since it won't let you use mp_gamemode directly in server at the moment. Hope this helps.

Hey I seem to be running into a prob i just downloaded it today from this page and it failed to install so i manually placed it in the addons folder then i run l4d try single player (not campaign) and it loads almost 100% then a blink of a screen that says like unable to play or something to that effect pops us then after waiting 10 more sec the game seems to start only it says ya know pick a side but either side i pick doesnt do anything the pick a side window pops up 1 sec later. I have tryed all the switch teams commands and all that whoo ha any luck you might know what the issue is?

October 1st version of map has some kind of memory bug. There is an ever-increasing load on the person hosting the map, dropping you down to 10~ fps and I'd imagine eventually crashing the user.
I am also experiencing this bug. System grinds down to 7fps in areas that don't appear to present a heavy rendering load.
I found the problem. The DL link on the site still went to the 2.7 version, not the 2.8 version. I let the admin know, so it ought to be taken care of later today.

The 9 step guide to successfully pouncing Louis on Challenge 9 (bunny pouncing).
Step 1:Pounce at Louis.
Step 2:Fail.
Step 3:Be teleported back to start.
Step 4:Do NOT move.
Step 5:Do NOT turn, do NOT look up or down.
Step 6:Press and hold the crouch button.
Step 7:Press the pounce button.
Step 8:Press the jump button at the instant of landing on the disappearing platform OR return to Step 2.
Step 9:Pounce Louis for 12-13 damage.
Steps 4 and 5 are very important. You are failing because you are aiming too HIGH. In a "real world" situation, you would merely bump into Louis, possibly with a little pushing action. (In other words, you would fail and die.)

Hi, i have noticed some friends of mine have a hunter training map and it says the author is a guy called aionys… Is this just a different version? i dled the latest version from this site and i can't play with them still. They got it from l4dmaps.com
I am aionys. aionys and eyeonus are merely two different spellings for the same name, the former being phoenetic, the latter being compound. And the file from both sites is the same version, so I've no idea what is causing your problem.

ive tried all 3 installation methods and i cannot find the hunter training map in the game.
Make sure it's activated in the addons list.
Then choose CUSTOM CAMPAIGN in the campaign selection menu.
ive put it in the addons folder multiple times, and it still will not show up on the game addons
You're probably putting the wrong file in.

Well, one day I was downloading a map and it turned out to be a an application you know of… Paint lets you paint and stuff well anyways thats what it came up with and i downloaded hunter training and thats what happened to it it turned into "paint" instead of just double clicking it and it installing itself it turned into a paint so i tried using winrar,winzip and thats all but i still cant get it back so i was wondering how to fix it if anyone knew about it?
Sounds to me like you downloaded a virus.
Provided it's not a virus and it just changed your application association instead of double clicking he .vpk right click it and select open with, click browse got your steam folder/steamapps/common/l4dead/bin folder and select vpk.exe. then click check box to always use. if it's not a virus that should fix your problem.
i cant open it and when i open the VPK and put it in the MAP of L4D it wont play it!!! then i tried doing the easiest part of it i cant play it!!! then i downloded 7zip and i get 3 files 2 VTF files and one auto cad Dictionary thingy help me please!!
The .vpk doesn't go in the maps folder, it goes in the addons folder.
I have tried to extract the downloaded files into my addons folder, but for the .pdf file it won't extract and instead gives the message
"C:\Users\Laird\AppData\Local\Temp\hunter_training_source.zip: Unknown method in Hunter Training Mapping How to.pdf"
note that is not the location I am trying to extract to, it is the location of temporary data on my pc, aswell I have not recieved a .VPK file when I had downloaded the map.

The file you downloaded is named "hunter_training_SOURCE". That's the source code for the map, not the map itself.

This map is semi-compatible with L4D2 as is. In fact, there are only four problems I have been able to find-
1) mp_gamemode, the command that makes it possible to play as an infected, does not exist in L4D2, so single player is not possible automagically- it is still possible to play by entering "map hunter_training_map versus" into the console, however, and multiplayer is not affected. If Valve makes mp_gamemode available in L4D2, this will no longer be a problem.
2) The survivors are different people, so they do not go into the starting locations as the L4D survivors do. This can easily be fixed by adding start locations for them in the source code- I just need to figure out if the L4D2 Bill is Nick or Coach. :D This problem only affects the pouncing Challenges: 9 & 11-15.
3) Bunny pouncing is not possible in L4D2 based on my testing, so C9 must be clipped through. Since bunny pouncing isn't really all that great anyway, I may just replace it.
4) The model used to represent the skip-teleports do not exist in L4D2, so they will have to be included in the .vpk file. As is, a large red "ERROR" is seen in place of the model.
It won't be immediate, but I will be updating the map to enable compatibility with L4D2 soon- although issue one may never be fixed. We'll see.

Don't have a clue what you've downloaded then. I've just downloaded it and there are nav files in the download.
